Our team at Orange Pediatric Therapy realizes that most children and adolescents on the Autism Spectrum have a difficult time understanding and using social skills. Learning to respond to social cues does not always come natural to everyone, often making the social world feel like a foreign country where everyone but your child has a map. Because we often expect even typically developing children to naturally pick up on visual cues, we rarely stop and think about “how” to teach social skills to people with autism. Social skills include everything from greetings to reciprocal conversation to joint attention to understanding the theory of mind and feelings. Our social groups also teach basic social rules and general social/behavior expectations at home and in school.
